1966

oil, acrylic, and string collage

During the sixties, I worked consistently to foreground and overturn the standard codes I perceived as exhausted and redundant to my art practice, specifically those relating to materials, mediums, signature style, gender and hierarchical notions of value.
What began as an examination of collage mid 60s, developed into a major philosophical and conceptual process underlying my 50 year practice, giving form to my experience of the world — an embodied experience of linking pieces, parts, fragments — as I explored tensions set up by juxtaposing standard and abject “pieces”, parts and fragments in series of works. Over the following thirty years this became the major process underlying my art practice.
